Before setting out on an overnight trek, get a backcountry camping permit (403/859-5140 April–mid-May, 403/859-5133 summer, C$9.80 per night) and trail information from the park information center or administrative office. Reservations are available for wilderness campsites. A nonrefundable reservation fee (C$11.70) is charged, plus a modification fee for any additional changes to your itinerary. Reservations for backcountry trips may be made 90 days in advance beginning April 1 of each year.
A good two-day trip is the 19-mile Tamarack Tour toward the northwestern end of the park. Start on the Rowes Lake trail from the trailhead on the Akamina Parkway, and follow it north and west past tiny Lone Lake, Twin Lakes, and Lost Lake to the Snowshoe Trail, which follows Bauerman Creek to the Red Rock Parkway.
