Located west of Montana Tech  at the end of West Park Street (155 Museum Way, 406/723-7211, www.miningmuseum.org , 9 a.m.–6 p.m. daily, Apr.–Oct., $7 adults, $6 seniors, $5 youth 13–18, $2 children 5–12), the museum complex sits on an old mining claim called the Orphan Girl. Included on the grounds are a head frame, ore carts, a locomotive, and other hardware. The indoor museum contains mining tools, steam engines, ore samples, and an extensive archive of old photos from Butte’s  boom years.
In the same complex is Hell Roarin’ Gulch, a replica of a mining camp from 1900. A millinery shop, Chinese herb store, bank, church, school, post office, and other period buildings have been faithfully reconstructed.
