Located west of Montana Tech [1] at the end of West Park Street (155 Museum Way, 406/723-7211, www.miningmuseum.org [2], 9 a.m.–6 p.m. daily, Apr.–Oct., $7 adults, $6 seniors, $5 youth 13–18, $2 children 5–12), the museum complex sits on an old mining claim called the Orphan Girl. Included on the grounds are a head frame, ore carts, a locomotive, and other hardware. The indoor museum contains mining tools, steam engines, ore samples, and an extensive archive of old photos from Butte’s [3] boom years.
In the same complex is Hell Roarin’ Gulch, a replica of a mining camp from 1900. A millinery shop, Chinese herb store, bank, church, school, post office, and other period buildings have been faithfully reconstructed.
