Alpine conditions exist in a few places in Montana. Above the timberline (9,000–10,000 feet), the gray-green ground cover includes small low-lying vegetation: grasses, mosses, lichens, sedges, and krummholz (small, twisted trees pruned by the wind) of whitebark pine.
