Slightly out of place thematically with the South Carolina Aquarium [1], the American Military Museum (360 Concord St., 843/577-7000, www.americanmilitarymuseum.org [2], Mon.–Sat. 10 a.m.–6 p.m., Sun. 1–5 p.m., $6 adults, $3 students) is one of those under-the-radar types of small, quaint museums that can be unexpectedly enriching.
Certainly its location near the embarkation point for the Fort Sumter [3] ferry hasn’t hurt its profile. It’s heavy on uniforms, with a wide range all the way from the Revolution to the modern day. My favorite is the 1907 naval uniform from the cruiser USS Charleston, part of Teddy Roosevelt’s Great White Fleet.
There’s also a good collection of rare military miniatures.
