Savannah [1]’s first and still premiere health food market, Brighter Day Natural Foods (1102 Bull St., 912/236-4703, www.brighterdayfoods.com [2], Mon.–Sat. 10 a.m.–7 p.m., Sun. 12:30–5:30 p.m.) has been the labor of love of Janie and Peter Brodhead for 30 years, all of them in the same location at the southern tip of Forsyth Park [3]. Boasting organic groceries, regional produce, a sandwich and smoothie bar in the back, and an extensive vitamin, supplement, and herb section, Brighter Day is an oasis in Savannah’s sea of chain supermarkets.
A throwback to the South’s old ways and a pleasant spot to pick up some fresh area produce downtown is Polk’s Fresh Market (530 E. Liberty St., 912/238-3032, Mon.–Sat. 8 a.m.–6 p.m.).
If you need some good quality groceries downtown—especially after-hours—try Parker’s Market (222 E. Drayton St., 912/231-1001, daily 24 hours). In addition to a pretty wide array of gourmet-style victuals inside, there are gas pumps outside to fuel your vehicle.
A local tradition for 20 years, Keller’s Flea Market (5901 Ogeechee Rd., Exit 94 off I-95, 912/927-4848, www.ilovefleas.com [4], Sat.–Sun. 8 a.m.–6 p.m.) packs in about 10,000 shoppers over the course of a typical weekend, finding a range of bargains in antiques, home goods, produce, and general kitsch. Free admission, concessions on-site.
A short ways into southside Savannah is a Fresh Market (5525 Abercorn St., 912/354-6075, Mon.–Sat. 9 a.m.–9 p.m., Sun. 11 a.m.–8 p.m.).
Currently there’s only one true supermarket in downtown Savannah, Kroger (311 E. Gwinnett St., 912/231-2260, daily 24 hours).
