A good destination for families, the Pink Palace (3050 Central Ave., 901/320-6320, www.memphismuseums.org [1], Mon.–Sat. 9 a.m.–5 p.m., Sun. noon–5 p.m.) is a group of attractions rolled into one.
The Pink Palace Museum (adults $8.25, children $5.75) is a museum about Memphis [2], with exhibits about the natural history of the Mid-South region and the city’s development. There is a full-scale replica of the first Piggly Wiggly market [3], plus an exhibit about how health care became such a large part of the Memphis economy.
The museum is housed within the Pink Palace Mansion, the Memphis home of Piggly Wiggly founder Clarence Saunders.
The Pink Palace is also home to the Sharpe Planetarium (adults $4.50, children $4), which is open on Saturday, and an IMAX movie theater (adults $8, children $6.25), which shows movies daily. Special package tickets are available for all the Pink Palace attractions.
