Jimmy Kelly’s (217 Louise Ave., 615/329-4349, Mon.–Sat. 5 p.m.–midnight, $12–36) is a family-run old-school steakhouse. Set in an old Victorian mansion a few blocks from Centennial Park and Vanderbilt, Jimmy Kelly’s has been operated by the Kelly family since 1934. During its lifetime, food fads have come and gone, but Jimmy Kelly’s has continued to serve excellent steaks and other grill foods.
Dinner begins with irresistible corn cakes, and continues with classic appetizers like crab cakes or fried calamari. Entrée choices include a half-dozen different steaks, lamb, grilled chicken, and seafood, including the best blackened catfish in the city. Jimmy Kelly’s offers low lighting, wood paneling, and attentive, but not fussy, service. Tables are set throughout what were once parlors, bedrooms, and porches in the old home, giving diners a feeling of homey intimacy.
