Knoxville [1] lies on the shore of the Tennessee River, also called Fort Loudoun Lake. The original city and today’s downtown center sit atop a bluff overlooking the river. The main thoroughfares through downtown are Gay Street [2], with its delightful historic storefronts, and Henley Street, which becomes Chapman Highway to the south and Broadway to the north. The Henley Street and Gay Street bridges are the primary routes over the Tennessee River.

Immediately west of downtown is the World’s Fair Park [3], identifiable by the gold-plated Sunsphere [4]. The University of Tennessee [5] and one of the city’s first suburbs, Fort Sanders [6], lie just west of the World’s Fair park. Cumberland Avenue, also known as “The Strip,” is the university’s main drag, and it divides UT from Fort Sanders. In recent years, many beautiful old historic homes in Fort Sanders have been torn down for the construction of condominiums.
