The fine arts are alive in Seattle [1], as will be immediately obvious even to those who visit briefly. For the latest fine arts exhibitions throughout Puget Sound, pick up a copy of Art Access (www.artaccess.com [2]) from a local gallery.

Downtown, Phoenix Rising Gallery (2030 Western Ave., 206/728-2332, www.phoenixrisinggallery.com [3]) is packed with glass pieces, jewelry, gifts, and other artwork. Other downtown galleries worth seeing include Lisa Harris Gallery (1922 Pike Pl., 206/443-3315, www.lisaharrisgallery.com [4]) and William Traver Gallery (110 Union St., 206/587-6501, www.travergallery.com [5]).

Several galleries fill a pedestrian-only stretch of Occidental Street just north of the sports stadiums, and along 1st Avenue S. Particularly notable ones include:

Join the Pioneer Square [13] throngs on the first Thursday of each month, when the galleries all stage opening receptions. It has become a big event and is a good opportunity to mingle with artists and art connoisseurs; bargain hunters appreciate the free munchies and drinks.

Pike Place Market [14] (www.pikeplacemarket.org [15]) always has photographers, painters, jewelers, and craftspeople selling their pieces for reasonable prices.

Also noteworthy for items from around the world is La Tienda Folk Art Gallery (4138 University Way NE, 206/632-1796, www.latienda-folkart.com [16]) in the U District [17].

In Fremont [18], try Frank & Dunya (3418 Fremont Ave. N, 206/547-6760), a fun gallery of "functional art" by Washington artists, or Edge of Glass Gallery (513 N. 36th St., 206/632-7807, www.edgeofglass.com [19], 11 a.m.–6 p.m. Wed.–Sun.) where you can watch students and teachers blowing glass. A monthly First Saturday Art Walk showcases artists at work and is one of Fremont’s many attractions for art lovers.
