The 40-acre Peace Arch State Park at the Canadian border has beautifully landscaped grounds and gardens surrounding the Peace Arch, a symbol of friendship between the U.S. and Canada that stands with one “foot” in each country. The park was constructed in 1921 by American and Canadian volunteers and funded by Washington and British Columbia [1] schoolchildren, who contributed from $0.01 to $0.10 each for the project. Pieces of the Mayflower and the Hudson’s Bay Company steamer Beaver are included in the monument.
A path lined with rhododendrons, dahlias, and azaleas leads from the arch greens to a picnic area and playground. Get to the Peace Arch by heading north on 2nd Street into the parking lot; customs officers from both nations don’t like folks stopping at the border crossing to enter the park.
