Over many years, the owner of Pierce County Refuse Co.—Harold E. LeMay—amassed the world’s largest private collection of automobiles. Classic car fans should definitely stop at the Harold E. LeMay Museum (325 152nd St. E, www.lemaymuseum.org , Summer Hours (Apr.–Sept.): 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Tues.–Sat., noon–5 p.m. Sun.; Winter Hours (Oct.–Mar.): 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Fri.–Sat., noon–5 p.m. Sun.; adults $15, children $5). This is the largest collection of vintage automobiles, trucks, and motorcycles in the world, with well over 2,300 rare and vintage cars. In addition to the Chevrolets, Fords, Cadillacs, Packards, and Hudsons, the collection includes Deusenbergs, Cords, and even a 1920 Pierce Arrow.
The Children’s Museum of Tacoma (936 Broadway, 253/627-6031, www.childrensmuseumoftacoma.org , 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Tues.–Sat., $3 adults, $4 ages 2–12, and free for tots) is a fun and educational place for kids, with changing exhibits.
