Poulsbo’s [1] Olympic Outdoor Center (18791 Front St., 360/697-6095, www.olympicoutdoorcenter.com [2]) is a great place to learn sea kayaking and white-water kayaking. Classes include the basics, special classes for kids, kayak rescue courses and roll clinics, and comprehensive four-day sea kayak courses. The center also leads sea kayak trips and sells and rents kayaks if you want to head out on your own.
Enjoy the wide-open grassy lawns and long shoreline at Kitsap Memorial State Park (360/779-3205, www.parks.wa.gov [3], $17 tents, $24 RV water/electric and dump privileges), about six miles north of downtown on Highway 3. There are ample picnic facilities, including rentable shelters with electricity and fire pits, as well as showers on-site.
A couple miles south of town, Eagle Tree RV Park (16280 Hwy. 305 NE, 360/598-5988, www.eagletreerv.com [4], $32 full hookups) offers RV owners another good option when the state park’s sites fill up.
