Gourmet fruits and vegetables are a specialty of Vashon Island [1]. Wax Orchards (22744 Wax Orchard, 206/463-9735, www.waxorchards.com [2]) offers fresh cider and homemade fruit syrups; and The Country Store and Farm (Vashon Hwy. SW at S.W. 204th St.) is another place to find locally grown items.
The Vashon Farmers Market (206/567-5539, 9 a.m.–2 p.m. Sat. April–mid-Oct.) in downtown Vashon is as much a social gathering as a place to buy island-grown food and island crafts.
Maury Island’s TailorMade Farm (206/463-9816) raises angora goats and Lincoln sheep—a long-haired English breed—and uses the wool in lamb fleeces and hand-woven rugs. There are at least seven llama farms on Vashon; check with the chamber of commerce for specifics, and also for local U-pick strawberry and raspberry farms.
