Anacortes [1] is natural place to rest your head before or after a long haul on the ferries across the San Juans [2]. It is also an excellent base camp for families and young travelers sticking to a budget—rooms are significantly less expensive than on San Juan [3], Orcas [4], or Lopez [5], and all the islands are within easy reach for a day trip.

Make reservations far ahead for the summer months; some places fill up by March for the peak season in July and August.
