Once in a Blue Moon Farm (412 Eastman Rd., Eastsound, 360/376-7035, www.onceinabluemoonfarm.com [2]) sits on a peaceful 35-acre farm estate with panoramic water and mountain views. This is one of the few places that allow visitors to bring along their pets (with advance notice); a kennel is adjacent to each unit. The owners have their own menagerie of animals that includes goats, llamas, horses, ducks, and chickens, plus an old orchard with apple, plum, cherry, and pear trees. Two rental apartments are available in a house on the farm: a three-bedroom unit (sleeps nine comfortably) with a large deck, fireplace, two baths, and kitchen for $250 d up to $450 for nine, and an attractive two-bedroom unit that includes a kitchen, woodstove, bath, and covered patio for $200 d or $245 for four people. Larger groups may want to rent the entire five-bedroom house.
Sitting right along the shoreline next door to Obstruction Pass State Park [3], Spring Bay Inn B&B (360/376-5531, www.springbayinn.com [4], $240–280 s or d) has five guest rooms with waterfront views, private baths, and fireplaces. The largest also features a hot tub with a water view. This kid-friendly inn sits on 60 acres with a network of trails that hook up into Obstruction Pass trails for further exploration. Rates include not only brunch but a way to work up your appetite beforehand—free kayak tours are guided each morning by the owners, both retired park rangers.
Located on three acres of waterfront property along West Sound, The Homestead (360/376-5284, www.homesteadorcas.com [5]) began life as a hay barn, but it has been transformed into a delightful home with large windows facing the water. This is a primo rental for families and groups to spread out and kick back. It has a large living room with a wood-burning stove, a seaside deck with gas barbecue, a large hot tub, full kitchen and bath, and modern furnishings. The cost is $400 per night for four people and includes the use of a kayak and rowboat moored on the dock out back.
