Service is known to be a bit iffy, and even the recently renovated rooms are a bit creaky at Carson Hot Springs Resort [1] (509/427-8292 or 800/607-3678, www.carsonhotspringresort.com [2]). But the hotel rooms ($80 d) and basic cabins ($60 d) at this historic hot springs are a convenient stopover for those seeking a soak in the soothing spring water. Reserve early if you plan to stay on a weekend. The restaurant serves three meals a day, none of which is likely to wow you.
For something a little nicer, Carson Ridge Private Cabins (509/427-7777, $210–235 s or d) redefines “roughing it” with whirlpool tubs, plush robes, and a DVD library. Each unit has a private porch with its own charming log-swing for relaxing and taking in the scenery. Wake up to a view overlooking the mountains and enjoy the full, hot breakfast served daily.
