Pick up a map at the Ellensburg Chamber of Commerce (801 S. Ruby St., 509/925-2002 or 888/925-2204, www.ellensburg-chamber.com [1]) for a self-guided tour of 31 Victorian-era buildings, most located within a five-block area between 6th and 3rd Avenues and Main and Pearl Streets. These “painted ladies” make up the backbone of Ellensburg’s [2] storied historical district and currently house apartments, shops, and galleries.
Thorp Grist Mill (11640 N. Thorp Hwy., Thorp, 509/964-9640, www.thorp.org [3], 11 a.m.–3 p.m. Thurs.–Sun. late May–Sept.), in the town of Thorp (eight miles northwest of Ellensburg), is a restored 1883 flour mill with the Northwest’s most complete display of historic milling equipment. The mill was used to grind flour and cornmeal until 1946 and is now a National Historic Landmark. An interpretive slide show is provided.
