Early Winters Outfitters (509/996-2659 or 800/737-8750, www.earlywintersoutfitting.com [1]) has horse pack trips of all types throughout the northern Cascades. If you’re traveling with young children, your best bet may be Back Country Burro Treks (509/996-3369).
The outfitters will supply you with a burro for the child and will pack all of your camping equipment and meet you at a designated campsite; trips are a minimum of three days.
For a more environmentally friendly animal tour, try Deli Llama (360/757-4212, www.delillama.com [2]), a delightful pack company run by a well-traveled husband and wife team who will entertain you with colorful stories over a plate of their gourmet trail food as the llamas bleat and graze nearby.
The llamas carry your gear, opening up a range of backcountry possibilities for those who can’t (or won’t) shoulder their own backpacks.
