Located near the junction of the Methow and Chewuch (CHEE-wuk) Rivers, Winthrop began as a mining settlement, settled into middle age as a ranching town, and has reemerged as a tourist mecca. Home to fewer than 400 year-round residents, Winthrop greets over 600,000 visitors annually.
Winthrop’s Main Street buildings have been remodeled with an Old West theme to reflect the town’s 1890s mining boom—and to encourage hungry, tired Highway 20 [1] drivers to stop for a meal, gas, and souvenirs.
Winthrop also hosts annual festivals and rodeos [2] that reflect the Western mood.
