On the north shore of Lake Chelan, drive the 12-mile scenic loop from downtown Manson along the shore of Lake Chelan, up into apple orchards [1], and past smaller lakes in the foothills, with striking views all along the way. From Manson, drive west on Lakeshore Drive and Summit Boulevard, north on Loop Avenue and Manson Boulevard, east on Wapato Lake Road, then south on the Chelan-Manson Highway back to Manson.
Another scenic drive is on the south shore of the lake; follow Highway 97 to the Chelan Butte Lookout sign across the street from the Park Lake Motel. The road curves upward for seven miles, with pullouts for photos of the lake and surrounding hills, the Columbia River almost directly below, the wheat fields of eastern Washington, and acres of apple orchards. The 3,892-foot butte is also one of the state’s best launching pads for hang gliders.
Stormy Mountain has views across Lake Chelan, into the North Cascades, and over into the arid wheat country. You reach it by driving up Lake Chelan’s South Shore Road to its end at Twenty-Five Mile Creek State Park, then take Forest Service Road 2805 to its end at Windy Camp. The view here is wonderful; a half-mile hike to the summit of 7,198-foot Stormy Mountain is even better.
