Chelan [1] has an international reputation as an excellent place to hang glide or paraglide. The best place for launching (or watching) is the summit of 3,892-foot Chelan Butte, where the hot winds blowing in from the Columbia River Basin give enormous lift.
The flying is so good, in fact, that it isn’t unusual for a hang glider to launch here and go nonstop to Spokane [2] or into Idaho. Craft can also be launched to the west over the town and lake, with a choice of several landing sites along the lakeshore.
Find a flying partner or learn from the locals who belong to Chelan Flyers (www.chelanflyers.com [3]). Newcomers to the sport can get lessons from Sky Brothers (612/280-9850).
