Waynesborough

Approximately 20 miles from Center City and five miles from Valley Forge [2] in Chester County, Waynesborough was the 18th-century home of Revolutionary War hero General Anthony Wayne. Wayne was the only commander in chief of the American military who never served as president of the United States, but his contributions to the war were momentous.

He led the Pennsylvania Line in the battles of Brandywine and Germantown, and survived the Valley Forge encampment. The national hero was nicknamed “Mad Anthony” as a result of his bravery and mercilessness.

Wayne spent ten years at this classic Pennsylvania farm manor house, but left in 1792 when President Washington asked him to serve as major general and commander in chief of the Legions of America.

The Georgian-style home was built using stone quarried on the property, and has been restored and furnished to reflect the Wayne family’s life here over seven generations from 1724 to 1965.
