Xochitl, on Headhouse Square [2], offers upscale, authentic Mexican cuisine in a cozy setting. Start with the delicious guacamole made tableside and sample one of several mouth-watering fresh ceviches.
Other menu highlights include the Sopa Axteca (a soup made with pasilla pepper, crema, avocado, and chihuahua cheese) poured tableside over fried tortillas, Barbacoa de Borrego (slow-cooked lamb), and Camarones al Mojo de Ajo (sautéed shrimp with garlic and cilantro).
An extensive tequila list can be served by the shot or flight or made into a margarita or other specialty drink. Save room for dessert; the churros y chocolate is just divine.
The tequila bar downstairs is a good alternative for tequila lovers who would rather drink and hear a DJ spin than eat a full dinner. Go for happy hour: half-priced house margaritas, $2 select beers, and a $6 Guero Special (shot of Sauza Blanco and a can of Tecate) at the upstairs bar Tuesday–Sunday 5–7 p.m. or in the lounge Thursday, Friday, and Saturday 10 p.m.–midnight.
