Fans of chicken wings, drinking, and scantily clad women will find their own strange heaven at this popular event. The Wing Bowl was founded by AM radio staple WIP 610 as a promotion to compensate for the Philadelphia Eagles’ [2] losing ways.
The city needed something to get excited about since the team kept losing, and somehow the Wing Bowl has partially lived up to that strange expectation, garnering much local fanaticism in its own right.
Traditionally held the Friday before the Super Bowl at the Wachovia Center [3], crowds form outside well before dawn, enjoying beer and wings for breakfast. Over 150 contestants compete in the wing-eating contest and more than 20,000 attend to watch the intensely competitive gorge-fest. Tickets are required and the event often sells out within 24 hours.
