Mountain bike rentals and tours of the nearby foothills are available from Mike’s Bikes (551 W. Washington St., 360/681-3868, www.mikes-bikes.net [1], 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Mon.–Fri., 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Sat., closed Sun.). One superb full-day ride near Sequim [2] is up Forest Road 2860, which winds up the side of the Dungeness River Valley (with spectacular views) to a junction with the end of the Lower Dungeness Trail.
The 11-mile single-track descent to Gold Creek is one of the best on the Olympic Peninsula [3], if not the entire state. Get there by car via Palo Alto Road, which leaves Highway 101 three miles east of Sequim [2], following signs to Forest Road 28. The lazy can arrange for a lift up the dirt road, but the downhill ride just isn’t quite as satisfying that way.
