Still delightfully free to the public is Henry Vilas Zoo (702 S. Randall Ave., 608/266-4732, www.vilaszoo.org [1], 9:30 a.m.–5 p.m. daily; children’s zoo open summers only). For a city of Madison [2]’s size, the array of 800 wild animals, representing almost 200 species, is quite impressive, with constantly expanding facilities, especially for big cats and primates.
The Herpetarium and Discovery Center offers hands-on entertainment for kids; they can also get free rides and various entertainment Sunday mornings in summer.
