Head a few blocks into the Kerrytown District [1], where you shouldn’t miss
Zingerman’s Delicatessen (422 Detroit St., 734/663-3354, www.zingermans.com [2], 7 a.m.–10 p.m. daily, $5–19), a story in itself. Gastronomes and food critics alike consider this New York–style deli the best deli in the Midwest—maybe the nation. Most head for the deli counter, offering more than 100 sandwiches, side salads, and fragrant imported cheeses.
The grocery side of the store has homemade breads and surrounding shelves stocked with the best of everything, from jams to olive oils. The grocery counter is busiest on weekday mornings, after work, and all day on weekends; the sandwich area is mobbed for lunch and dinner.
Consider calling ahead, to have your order waiting, and plan on eating at the relaxed Zingerman’s Next Door, where you can linger as long as you want over a meal.
