For fans of auto racing, the Michigan International Speedway (12626 U.S. 12, Brooklyn, 517/592-6666, www.mispeedway.com [1], racing times and ticket prices vary), which opened in 1968, offers one of the country’s premier racing facilities.
Featuring over 80,000 seats and a large RV campground, the track presents NASCAR races (for the Truck, Sprint Cup, and Nationwide series) from mid-June to mid-August.
In addition, the speedway often presents official driving schools during the warmer months, so if you have a lead foot, perhaps you should try some legal speeding instead.
The Jackson [2] area is nuts for golf and hides a number of high-quality public courses. Two good choices are the Arbor Hills Golf Club (1426 Arbor Hills Rd., 517/750-2290, www.arborhillsgolf.com [3], daily Apr.–Oct., $15–35 w/cart), formerly a private club for over 80 years, and the Cascades Golf Course (1992 Warren Ave., 517/788-4323, www.cascadesgolfcourse.com [4], daily Apr.–Oct., $18–35 w/cart), established in 1929 and voted Jackson’s best golf course in 2007.
