Naturalists will appreciate the Kellogg Forest (7060 N. 42nd St., Augusta, 269/731-4597, 8 a.m.–8 p.m. in summer, 8 a.m.–dusk in winter, free), begun by cereal king W. K. Kellogg as a demonstration project for reforesting abandoned farms.
Michigan State University [1] maintains the 716-acre property as an experimental forest, which includes more than 200 species of trees, 2.5 miles of road, and 35 miles of hiking and cross-country skiing trails.
Hikers and skiers also use the forest’s 25 miles of ungroomed firebreaks separating experimental stands of trees, and picnickers favor the forest, too.
