In Midland [1], cyclists favor the Pere Marquette Rail-Trail (989/832-6870), a 30-mile-long asphalt trail that’s also a hit for those on foot, in-line skates, or with wheelchairs or strollers. It begins in downtown Midland near the Tridge, a three-way pedestrian footbridge spanning the confluence of the Tittabawassee and Chippewa Rivers.
The Tridge is a local landmark, and a gathering spot for picnics, concerts, festivals, and more. From there, the rail-trail follows Saginaw Road to Coleman, passing by the Dow Historical Museum and Bradley Home before reaching the towns of Averill and Sanford.
For campers, Black Creek State Forest Campground (220 W. Ellsworth, 989/275-5151, daily mid-Apr.–Nov., $20) offers 23 semi-modern sites (as in no electricity or showers), which can accommodate tents or RVs. Sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Campers can enjoy nearby hiking trails, bird-watching opportunities, a boat launch, and access to several lakes and rivers ideal for anglers.
