Along with the Grand Hotel [1] (906/847-3331, www.grandhotel.com [2], $450–750 d), there are plenty of grand and graceful places to stay on Mackinac Island [3]. Yes, rates can be high, but don’t dismiss staying on Mackinac; you can find reasonable rates at smaller B&Bs and apartments, the latter of which often have good deals for weeklong stays. The options below tip both ends of the scale.

The Chippewa Hotel (250 Main St., 906/847-6494, www.chippewahotel.com [4], $95–545 d) is a venerable old Mackinac Hotel that had a $3 million renovation several years back. The result is a classy and comfortable place to stay, with a location in the heart of the island, on Main Street, overlooking the marina. The 24-person lakeside hot tub alone may be worth the stay.

The Mission Point Resort (6633 Main St., 906/847-3312, www.missionpoint.com [5], $149–599 d) may have the island’s very best location, spread across 18 acres at the island’s southeastern tip. Though not from the Victorian era—it was built in the 1950s by the Moral Rearmament Movement, a post–World War II patriotic group—the sprawling, bright-white resort is attractive and well kept, with beautiful lawns lined with Adirondack chairs. Amenities include an outdoor pool, tennis and volleyball courts, and loads of children’s activities.

The Pine Cottage Tourist Home (906/847-3820, $79–129 d), just three blocks from Main Street, offers one of the island’s most economical lodging options.
