One of the best dining deals on Mackinac Island [1] is the Fort Mackinac Tea Room (906/847-3328, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. daily June–Sept., $9–18), located in the lower level of the Officer’s Stone Quarters within the fort. Surrounded by thick masonry walls, the tearoom serves up both a great atmosphere and delicious food, with good soups, salads, and sandwiches prepared by Grand Hotel chefs. Opt for a spot on the terrace since the high setting is outstanding, and forts were not exactly designed for expansive views.

Everyone has to hit the Pink Pony Bar & Grill (906/847-3341, 10 a.m.–1:30 a.m. daily, $9–32) at least sometime during a Mackinac visit. Located in the Chippewa Hotel overlooking the marina, this is the party place following the famed Chicago-to-Mac yacht race. The food’s great, too, with good burgers, whitefish sandwiches and such on the lunch menu, and steaks, seafood, and ribs for dinner.

Sooner or later, you’ll succumb to fudge. A visitor treat since Victorian tourism days, shops line Main Street. One of the oldest, Murdick’s Fudge (www.murdicks.com [2]), established in 1887, has a Main Street location (as well as one in Mackinaw City). You can buy a sizable slab to take or mail home, or just a small sliver to nibble. (A little goes a long way—it’s very rich stuff.)
