The St. Ignace [1] area provides campers lots of options, especially if you want to stay somewhere with some seclusion but still be close to the area’s many attractions. Just a couple miles west of the bridge, the Lakeshore Park Campground (416 Pointe La Barbe, 906/643-9522, www.lakeshoreparkcampground.com [2], $25–36) has RV sites, tent spaces, and easy access to Lake Michigan.
Straits State Park (720 Church St., 906/643-8620, state park vehicle permit required, $16–28) may not be particularly peaceful, but 270 modern and semi-modern sites are clean and convenient. Aim for the nicely wooded sites right on the Straits, which offer great views of the bridge. To reach the park, take I-75 to U.S. 2 and exit at Church Street, then follow Church south for a half-mile.
