H-58 passes largely through state forest land, which encompasses much of the Lake Superior shoreline, extends six or seven miles inland in many places, and serves as a buffer zone protecting Pictured Rocks [1]. Several other “truck trails” spin off gravel H-58, sandy roads that are usually well marked at intersections and quite navigable. They can be confusing, however, so venture off onto them with a good map or at least a good sense of direction.
