Founded in 1968, the International 500 Snowmobile Race (906/635-1500, www.i-500.com [1]) has become one of the world’s largest and longest snowmobile races. Usually occurring in the beginning of February, this annual event lures thousands of snowmobilers to Sault Ste. Marie [2], where they speed around a one-mile oval course, competing against one another for an impressive purse, nowadays close to $40,000. Visitors, too, relish this frenzied spectacle, one you’re unlikely to see in many places.
