Active Backwoods Retreats (E5299 W. Pioneer Rd., 906/932-3502, $10 adults, $8 children 11–17, $5 children under 11) grooms 25 miles of trails for skating and striding, on hundreds of acres of private land three miles south of Ironwood [1]. A warming hut, lessons, and rentals are available.
Between Ironwood and Bessemer, take Section 12 Road north from U.S. 2 to reach Wolverine Nordic Trails. Situated on private land and maintained by volunteers, its 9.3 miles of groomed trails wind through the hilly country south of the Big Powderhorn ski area. You can, in fact, ride one of Powderhorn’s chairlifts ($2 per ride) to access the network. Otherwise, begin at the lot with the warming hut on Sunset Road off Section 12 Road. Donations are requested.
