This is the REI Denver [2] flagship store and it definitely stands out from other locations. REI occupies a historic tramway building right along the South Platte River. The enormous space has a climbing pinnacle and there are multiple levels selling clothing, gear, shoes, and outdoor equipment.
The REI Denver Flagship Pinnacle is a 47-foot imitation of the actual sandstone climbing rocks further west of town. The pinnacle is a 6,400-square-foot surface of hand-sculpted formations, including hand and footholds instead of bolts. REI offers classes for beginners, women, kids, and more with a schedule that changes monthly (classes are for REI members, but it’s easy to join).
While most of the people who scale this monolith are serious about climbing, it’s become a favorite snapshot spot with people paying to climb just high enough for that “Look at me!” moment.
There is also a small bookstore and huge map selection. Up on the children’s level, parents can let kids romp in the indoor playground near the sale merchandise. Equipment rental is also available here.
