Find out why the Green Mountains have inspired artists and writers throughout the decades with these creative diversions.
Base yourself in the sophisticated outlet town of Manchester [1], where you can spend the morning touring the exhibits at the Southern Vermont Art Center [2] or the Victorian furnishings at Abraham Lincoln’s son’s former estate of Hildene [2].
The next day, head north on Route 7 to Rutland [3] (45 min.) for a taste of America’s great small-town memorialist at the Norman Rockwell Museum. After lunch, continue north to Middlebury [4] (45 min.) for a tour of the small but impressive Middlebury College Museum of Art [5] or the quaint Vermont Folklife Center [6], before returning to Manchester for the night.
Today, head south on Route 7A, making a detour in Shaftsbury (15 min.) to visit the Robert Frost Stone House Museum [7], former home of its namesake poet. Then continue on to Bennington [8] (20 min.) to visit the Bennington Museum [9], which contains the unique art of folk artist Grandma Moses.
