As in all things, Coral Bay’s shopping is offbeat and unique. It is also growing. The opening of the Coccoloba Shopping Center on Route 107 doubled shopping outlets in this far-flung community, for better or for worse. In addition to some practical things like a mail box service and grocery store, Coccoloba contains art, clothing, and souvenir shops.
The original Coral Bay shopping complex is at Skinny Legs, just east of the main Coral Bay crossroads of Routes 107 and 10. Here, Mumbo Jumbo (340/779-4277) sells island clothes, handbags, sunglasses, and footwear. Also at Skinny Legs is Syzygy Gallery (Cocolobo Complex, Coral Bay, 340/693-0084, www.syzygyartgallery.com [1], 11 a.m.-6:30 p.m. daily), which sells works by a number of St. John [2] artists and is a hub of artistic energy on St. John. Come here to buy art ranging from St. John–themed mouse pads to original paintings, or to simply catch the buzz on the local art scene.
A great stop for everyone, especially families, is the Tall Ship Trading Company (340/776-6816), next to Shipwreck Landing along Route 107. Here you can watch an old-fashioned silkscreen T-shirt press in operation and choose from the latest designs for yourself. Neighboring shops sell postcards, T-shirts, hats, and other island-inspired accessories and gifts.
