Located two blocks past the intersection of Joe’s Hill Road and Main Street [1] is the Sunday Morning Well, the place where some historians believe emancipation was announced on August 1, 1834. Others say it was read in churches around the territory. The Sunday Morning Well is the site of an annual emancipation remembrance ceremony that takes place during the August Festival [2]. Today there is a sheltered seating area and fountain. It’s a popular place for people to gather and talk.
