Opened amid a furor of controversy back in the early 2000s, Dolphin Discovery (Prospect Reef Resort, 284/494-7675, www.dolphindiscovery.com [1]) soldiers on, selling “dolphin encounters” to willing tourists. Critics said that the attraction did not fit with the BVI’s generally responsible nature-based tourism product. They also criticized the practices of captive dolphin attractions in general. These days, the debate has died down, but there are still those with strong views on dolphin swimming.
It costs $80 for a brief dolphin encounter and up to $140 for a longer swim. Many of the facility’s customers are from cruise ships that visit Tortola [2].
