The Virgin Islands [1] are small tufts of green set in the Caribbean Sea, 1,075 miles from Miami and 40 miles from Puerto Rico [2]. Steep and forested islands, their hillsides plunge to the shoreline. The coast, lined by powder-white sand and fringed by protective coral reefs, is pleasantly scalloped. Some bays are especially wide, flat, and sheltered.
