Women are sometimes the target of harassment in the Virgin Islands [1], and women traveling alone should always be aware of their surroundings. Don’t walk alone at night in town, and certainly don’t try to catch a ride alone at any time. Catcalls, often in the form of a hiss, are common.
Women dining or drinking alone are a prime target for harassment. Bring a book and develop a very cold demeanor if you really want to be left alone. Likewise, a woman alone on the dance floor is a magnet for men. Often, it seems like it does not matter how many times you tell a man you do not want to dance with him. This can easily spoil a night of dancing. Some men consider all female visitors to be in the market for a steamy West Indian vacation romance. If you’re not, don’t let anyone think you are.
