Both the U.S. and British Virgin Islands use United States currency. Travelers from Europe, Canada, and other parts of the world can exchange money at banks throughout the islands. Banking hours are generally 9 a.m.–3 p.m., although some banks have longer hours. There are no independent money changers.
Hotels, car rental agencies, charter boat companies, retail shops, and large restaurants almost always accept credit cards and travelers checks. In fact, many hotels and car rental companies require a credit card. Some smaller establishments do not accept these forms of payment, however, and others require a minimum purchase amount to process a credit card payment. Always ask first.
Tipping follows the same general pattern as in the United States: Tip between 10 and 20 percent for restaurant service and a few dollars for someone who helps you with your bags. Taxi drivers can be tipped if you are especially impressed with their service, but a tip is not required.
