Technically it’s a bar, but Pickled Onion (53 Front St., tel. 441/295-2263, www.thepickledonion.com [1], lunch 11:30 a.m.–5 p.m., dinner 5:30–10 p.m. daily) has a restaurant-caliber menu, with a variety of nicely presented appetizers, pastas, fresh fish, salads, steaks, and desserts. The live music and drinks are just a bonus.
You couldn’t find a more British-looking establishment than Hog Penny (5 Burnaby Hill, tel. 441/292-2534, www.hogpennypub.com [2], 11:30 a.m.–1 a.m. daily), where home-cooked and typically ill-named staples like shepherd’s pie and toad-in-the-hole are comfortable favorites. Its “crusted dinners” (beef Wellington, scallopini veal chop) are well liked, too.
All-day breakfasts, super sandwiches, and build-your-own burgers get top billing at The Docksider Pub & Restaurant (121 Front St., tel. 441/296-3333, www.dockies.com [3], 11 a.m.–2 a.m. Mon.–Fri., 10 a.m.–3 a.m. Sat. and Sun.), a crowded hangout all year around.
