“Anything but a boat” is the battle cry of participants vying for honors in Mangrove Bay’s annual July Non-Mariners Race (tel. 441/236-3683). Organized by Sandys Boat Club, the Sunday afternoon affair features teams of Bermudians gussied up as pirates or in top hats, trying to sail across the bay in assorted craft made from anything you might least imagine had the ability to float. Needless to say, most end up in the drink. It’s a laugh, for participants and the crowd of onlookers, many of whom arrive by boat and form party-style raft-ups that remain the entire day.
