Mangrove Bay and its nearby shoreline provides one of the best vantage points from which to watch the Bermuda dinghy races. The much-loved tradition, featuring the island’s trademark vessels vying for weekly honors amid mountains of sail and a flotilla of spectator boats, is one of the summer’s highlights.
Bermuda Dinghy Races are held every Sunday afternoon, alternating between different parts of Bermuda, namely St. George’s Harbour, Granaway Deep in the Great Sound, and Mangrove Bay, where they sail from Sandys Boat Club (tel. 441/234-2248).
The best part is when crew members jump overboard to lighten the load (they usually get rescued by passing friends or swim to raft-ups, where they can cheer on their boat with a beer or rum). Call the club for schedule details. Just around a few corners, on Watford Island, the West End Sailboat Club (tel. 441/234-1252, kitchen 441/234-2523) organizes the annual East-to-West Comet Race.
