The smallest drawbridge in the world, Somerset Bridge (Somerset Rd. at Robinson’s Marina) has become a quintessential Bermuda icon, featured on postcards and the island’s banknotes for almost a century.
The bridge’s central plank can be raised, an opening just wide enough to permit a yacht’s mast to be eased through by someone standing above, thereby allowing vessels to pass between the Great Sound and Ely’s Harbour (though this is a rare occurrence in modern times). Built in the 17th century, the structure is one of the most historic points in the parish, connecting Somerset Island to the mainland.
