Open to the public, the privately owned, 22-acre Heydon Trust Estate (Heydon Dr., off Somerset Rd., opposite Willowbank Resort, open sunrise to sunset daily, admission free) is a natural enclave of protected woodland, farmers’ fields, a couple of private homes, and the charming Heydon Chapel atop the hill. Turn in off the main road and follow the country lane all the way to the tiny whitewashed building, which overlooks the Great Sound.
It dates back to a 1616 survey of Bermuda, and today it is still used for religious services. Nearby, a walled rose garden contains numerous chinas, teas, and mystery species; it’s considered one of Bermuda’s best collections. There are also trails rambling through the extensive cherry forests around the property. The land is a noted birding location.
