Taking a horseback ride through parkland, tribe roads, and across beaches can be a leisurely way to see Bermuda. Warwick’s Spicelands Riding Centre [1] (50 Middle Rd., west of Warwick Pond, tel. 441/238-8212, spicelands [at] northrock [dot] bm) offers lessons and horseback outings. For harness-racing excitement, visit the National Equestrian Centre [2] (48 Vesey St., tel. 441/234-0485, or 441/505-0903, www.bef.bm [3]) in Devonshire on Sunday afternoons through the winter season, when pony-trap owners vie for bragging rights.
Former track star Michael Watson’s other love has always been horseback riding, specifically Western saddle, and he appears regularly at island equestrian competitions in full cowboy regalia. His tours Mike Watson’s Western & English Horse Riding (tel. 441/234-6773 or 441/747-7433) take visitors along the Railway Trail and through the maze of beach dunes in the South Shore National Park.
